The Town of North Reading is at a crossroads. Backed by mostly residential taxes as a basis for both school and municipal funding, the cost for services is growing at a significantly faster rate than the town can generate. The town can only raise taxes 2.5% annually. For town operations, current forecasts indicate an average budget gap that will increase by over $2M annually over the next 20 years. With new growth slowing, the School Committee will need a proven, effective leader who can help guide the schools through this challenging time. My Experience in large Government funding, Finance Committee and as a Camp Director at a YMCA nonprofit will enable me to navigate these very difficult waters, work with the school administration and work with parents to achieve our goals for our students.
Currently there is a $1.2M deficit to fund our schools at level services in 2025. The district has also outlined a number of additional budget items that would drive this deficit to $1.9M to maintain and improve upon the outstanding education that is provided today. I am running to ensure that we consider all aspects of our children's education as we make these critical decisions for our schools.
Given our town challenges, it is imperative that we continue to drive and provide opportunities for our children to thrive in the classroom.
Consistent with the NRPS 2025 vision, I firmly believe that we should offer free full day kindergarten. Full day kindergarten jump starts the entire educational process and prepares each student for lifelong learning.
North Reading must prepare its students by investing in curriculum that will be relevant in 20 years. This includes Robotics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Learning, Video Production, and much, much more. Our students will be better prepared for college and the workforce by fostering an environment of cutting edge learning and limitless ideas.
North Reading provides some of the finest Sports and Fine Arts programs in the state. We have a state football championship! We continue to win award after award in both our Musicals and Music groups! We need to ensure that our students continue to have these opportunities and experiences as young adults. We also need to find ways to cut down on the financial burden of activity fees for all students.
We have a responsibility to our students to teach them that the world is far bigger than NRPS! In the classroom we can teach our children that they have the awesome responsibility to consider the perspective of others, find ways to include people in everything we do, and celebrate our similarities and differencesI will be an advocate for fostering an environment that highlights the impact each and everyone one of us can make in their community.
I will be a responsible voice for our school budget and engage school leadership on the best and most practical ways to address the needs of our students.
We have had the fortune of having exceptional educators for our children. It is our responsibility to maintain our teaching pipeline, both teachers and para professionals. We must remain competitive with our surrounding districts to find and retain top educational talent.
A top priority must be finding and establishing ways for our educators to be innovative and find cost effective education tools and curriculum to continue to ensure our students have every advantage and opportunity before entering college or the workforce.
Like our family, most people move to North Reading for the outstanding schools! Our parents are a vital resource to reinforce learning in the classroom, volunteer for opportunities, or use their experience to find innovative ways to improve our schools.
As the parent of an elementary and middle school student, I understand how difficult it is to track our student's progress and activities across multiple platforms. I would like to work with the School District on a unified parent dashboard will streamline the parents ability to stay engaged with their student and teachers.
We have a number of parents that are passionate about a number of topics, from STEM to Music, Fine Arts to Sports. I will find ways to engage our parents to allow their expertise to shine and be involved with their students education, even from behind the scenes.
